What are CVD diamonds?

CVD diamonds are Chemical Vapor Deposition, a CVD diamond is chemically identical to a naturally mined diamond. It is made of carbon atoms and natural gas just like a natural diamond. CVD diamonds are man-made diamonds. Unlike natural diamonds which take billions of years to form deep beneath the Earth’s surface, CVD diamonds are grown in labs.

In addition to the chemical compositions, the optical and physical traits of lab diamonds such as CVD diamonds and natural diamonds are the same. CVD diamonds are as hard and durable as natural diamonds and display the same brilliance and fire when cut as a gemstone. The essential difference between a lab created diamond and a mined diamond is that one is created in a lab and the other is naturally mined.

What is diamond color?

The diamond color scale begins at D and ends at Z. The closer to D a diamond is, the more colorless it is. The closer to Z a stone is, the more body color it has. All other factors being equal, the closer to D a diamond sits on this scale, the rarer and more expensive it is.

Diamonds in the Colorless tier, D, E, and F, are completely colorless. D is an icy, clear color without a hint of yellow.

Near colorless diamonds, (G, H, I, and J grades,) are the best value in diamonds. G color is just one step down from the truly Colorless tier, so it still appears very colorless.

Diamonds in grades K-Z face up with a significant amount of yellow or brown body color. Stones in these ranges will never look colorless.
